MTT Shipping Group of Companies proudly celebrated the launch of its latest eco-friendly vessel, the M.V. MTT Xu May, at Linhai Huipu Shipbuilding Co. Ltd.

This new 508-TEU capacity vessel, named after the eldest granddaughter of Group Executive Chairman Dato’ Seri Kenny Ong, represents another significant milestone in MTT Shipping’s commitment to drive innovation and sustainability in maritime transportation.

The launch ceremony was officiated by Madam Cindy Yap, the godmother of M.V. MTT Xu May and the wife of MTT Shipping's Director of Operations, Mr. Lee Kong Siong. Madam Yap’s role as godmother holds special significance, symbolizing good fortune and protection for the vessel and her crew on every journey.

In a groundbreaking development for maritime logistics across the region, MTT Shipping has tackled a long-standing challenge for Southeast Asia's river networks. Traditionally navigable only by smaller tugboats and barges, many of these waterways have limited cargo capacities due to their shallow depths. By introducing larger, purpose-built shallow-drafted vessels like the M.V. MTT Xu May, MTT Shipping is revolutionizing shallow-drafted trade throughout the ASEAN region.

“M.V. MTT Xu May is not only a tribute to our Chairman’s family but also a testament to our dedication to sustainability and constantly developing and innovating shipping solutions in the ASEAN region,” said Mr. Lee Kong Siong during the ceremony.

He also expressed his gratitude to Linhai Huipu shipyard, the NSB Group for their expert shipbuilding supervision, and RINA for their guidance and support throughout certification process.

The M.V. MTT Xu May is the first of four sister ships, specifically designed as a gas-powered deck ship optimized for shallow-drafted trade in ASEAN. This vessel operates exclusively on Marine Gas Oil (MGO), a cleaner alternative to Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) and Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO).

While MGO has slightly higher CO₂ emissions per gram burned, it significantly reduces sulfur oxides (SOx) and particulate matter (PM), contributing to improved air quality and a lower environmental footprint. Its overall combustion profile is more eco-friendly, producing significantly lower levels of pollutants harmful to human health and the environment.

The launch of M.V. MTT Xu May concluded with Madam Cindy Yap bestowing her blessing, wishing the vessel “fair winds, calm seas, a long and prosperous life, and the safe return of her crew at the end of every voyage.”
