MTT Rajang to the Rescue: Crew Saves Seven Stranded Fishermen in Distress

While en voyage from Port Klang to Senari Port, MTT Rajang carried out a remarkable rescue operation at sea, saving seven fishermen who had been adrift for over four hours after their boat capsized approximately 10 nautical miles north of Tanjung Po.

The fishermen had departed from Kuching for a routine fishing trip when their boat began leaking mid-morning and eventually sank. With only life jackets keeping them afloat, the crew endured hours of uncertainty under harsh sea conditions.

At around 3:30 PM, the bridge team aboard MTT Rajang spotted the group in distress. After assessing the situation and ruling out any piracy threat, Captain Filemon Ady Trijono acted decisively. Twenty minutes later, all seven individuals were safely rescued and brought onboard.

Coordination efforts immediately followed:

  • MTT Lumut relayed the rescue to Kuching Port Control

  • Mr. Awang and Mr. Donny from Operations Team of MTT Shipping’s Kuching branch alerted local authorities

  • The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) dispatched a team to meet the vessel at anchorage

  • The Kuching Immigration Department was informed to ensure proper disembarkation procedures

  • The vessel agents were promptly notified by Captain Filemon of a delay due to the emergency operation

Although all personal belongings were lost to the sea, the lives of the seven fishermen were saved  — thanks to the vigilance, professionalism, and compassion of MTT Rajang’s crew.

Such decisive action illustrates the spirit of MTT Shipping, grounded in humanity, responsibility, and the courage to act when it matters most.
